To commemorate the start of the United
Nations Conference on Environmental Protection in Stockholm on 5th
June 1972, the UN has declared the 5th of June "World Environment
Day".
The 6th conference of German environment ministers (Länder and national) in 1976 determined that World Environment Day would
also be celebrated in Germany.
All national and local authority offices were called upon to respond
by putting on events to encourage environmentally aware behaviour
in the population.
The emphasis is intended to be on local activities by councils,
schools and other state bodies, and by companies, environmental
groups and other associations.
In 1978 the 10th conference of environment ministers decided to
nominate themes for each World Environment Day, while offering each
Land complete freedom in reflecting the chosen topic.
There has now been a motto for World Environment Day in Germany
since 1980:
