The PortalU - Umweltportal Deutschland (German Environmental Information Network) brings together a wide range of information currently distributed across many different web sites run by public organisations in Germany, such as environmental authorities, agencies and ministries at the federal and Land (state) levels.

The German Environmental Information Network was conceived under the title "Umweltportal Deutschland PortalU 2000" in a close cooperative effort between the Federal Government and the Federal Länder in the framework of an Environmental Research Plan (UFOPLAN) project managed by the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt - UBA).
