Trailblazer for the environment in Germany (40/2010)

Profile: Founding President of Federal Environment Agency, Dr. Heinrich Freiherr von Lersner, turns 80
His lifework is virtually equivalent to the concept of ecology. Heinrich Freiherr von Lersner was one of the first figures to shape German environmental policy. In 1970, the administrative lawyer with a PhD took charge of the newly established division of water and waste management within the department of environmental protection at the Federal Ministry of Interior. Four years later he was appointed first president of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), and in that position, from 1974 to 1995, he worked to establish UBA as a reputable scientific public office which plays a significant role in shaping environmental policy. Heinrich von Lersner celebrates his 80th birthday today.

Energy goal for 2050: 100% renewable electricity supply (39/2010)

New UBA study shows that electricity supplied entirely from renewable energies is realistic
Germany’s electricity supply could make a complete switch to renewable energies by 2050. The technology already available on the market could make this possible even today, but it requires that electricity be used and produced very efficiently. These are the results of the Energieziel 2050: 100% Strom aus erneuerbaren Quellen [100% renewable electricity supply by 2050] study done by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). In order to achieve this goal by 2050 UBA is calling for timely political support.

New ordinance on small firing installations to ensure improved air quality (38/2010)

Research project calculates reduction of particulates, develops particulate calculator for residential areas
According to a recent study carried out on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the new environmental requirements for wood-fired heaters, woodstoves, and other small firing installations using solid fuels will make considerable improvements in particulate emissions. The results of the study done by the University of Stuttgart Institute of Process Engineering and Power Plant Technology (IVD) and Ingenieurbüro Lohmeyer of Karlsruhe claim that pollution levels in affected residential areas will drop by five to ten percent as a result of the amended 1st Ordinance for the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act (1. BImSchV) alone. Since actual pollution from small firing installations depends quite heavily on local circumstances, UBA commissioned the development of the ‘BIOMIS’ PC application with which city planners can carry out independent estimates for individual residential areas. The application is now available for download from the UBA website.
