Research and development project: Rare metals – great impact (2007)

The study ”Rare metals - Measures and concepts for the solution of the problem of conflict-aggravating raw material extraction - the example of coltan” suggests a definition of "rare metals" and surveys the use of metals in information and communication technology. The study uses the example of coltan extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo to explore how the demand for rare metals intensifies armed conflicts and presents possible solutions.

Research and development project: Recycling of platinum group metals – Car export at Hamburg Port (2007)

On behalf of the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt – UBA), the Öko-Institut has analysed export flows of used cars and used electrical and electronic equipment at the Port of Hamburg. One reason for the study was that recycling rates for platinum group metals from automobile catalytic converters are currently unsatisfactory. To increase these rates, the study recommends that the firms involved in such exports should be encouraged to help improve international recycling flows.
