The aim of the Plant Safety and Accident Prevention Section at the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt – UBA) is to prevent, wherever possible, the occurrence of major accidents in installations that handle hazardous substances and to limit the impact on people and the environment of those incidents that nevertheless occur.
To this end, we conduct research, support enforcement, support the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), work in regulatory bodies and record and analyse national and international incidents with a view to developing technical and organisational measures to help prevent such occurrences in the future or at least limit their impact.
