The report “Data on the Environment” is published every four years. It takes stock of the development of the state of the environment in Germany, highlights environmental improvements and shows where action is still needed.
The 23rd International Conference on Informatics for Environmental Protection was a platform for discussing environmental informatics topics and specific issues such as Green IT and resource efficiency. In his keynote speech, UBA vice-president Dr. Holzmann described the opportunities and potential presented by interdisciplinary cooperation in environmental informatics. In line with this approach, EnviroInfo 2010 in Cologne will take place in cooperation with INTERGEO.
Read all about the state of the environment in Germany. How has air quality and the quality of our rivers and lakes changed, what are the trends in pollution from transport and energy consumption, what are the German government’s objectives and strategies for protection of human health and the environment?
Germany can point to a number of significant successes in matters of environmental protection. However, much remains to be done. The updated UBA Environmental Key Indicator System (KIS) shows the current status of environmental protection in Germany.
The brochure presents important and topical facts from the Federal Environment Agency’s core environmental indicator system. 44 environmental indicators – theme-based “signposts in the jungle” of environmental data – provide information about the state of the environment in Germany.
The rapid development of Web technology is playing an increasingly important role in determining both theoretical and practical applications among experts in the environmental field. A workshop held by the Committee for Information Sciences in Conservation’s working group on environmental databases focused on the development of professional networks beyond the confines of public offices, institutions, and areas of expertise. With a view to making environmental information explicitly available, public offices, scientific circles, and the industry presented some interesting environmental information systems solutions.
Checking on developments in environmental protection at a glance: The list of over 50 indicators covers everything from greenhouse gases and renewable energies to lead concentrations in blood. KIS shows how far along Germany is in achieving its environmental goals on the path to sustainable, environmentally compatible development.
